Importance of genre

Much of the pleasure of popular cinema lies in the process of the "difference in repetition"- I.e. recognition of familiar elements and in the way these elements might be orchestrated in an  unfamiliar fashion or in the way that unfamiliar elements might be introduced. - Steve Neale (1980)

Genre is constituted by "specific systems of expectations and hypothesis which spectators bring with them to the cinema and which interact with the films themselves during the course of the viewing process." -Steve Neale


Genre Bounderies

Genre boundaries are flexible to allow for creativity and creative interpretation by the audience. for example, back to the future 3 includes:
  • Science fiction
  • Western
  • Comedy
  • Romance

Horror Genre

The horror genre usually has a generic setting, character and plot. These are used to create you're typical horror story.

Settings:
A typical horror genre setting is usually consist of somewhere dark, cold, late at night and sometimes in bad weather. They also take place somewhere isolated and out of the public eye. such as, graveyards, abandoned buildings, forests, and old school/hospital, an attic or basement or a mental institution.


Characters:
Victims are usually are weak people that may be stranded or alone, such as women, young females, children and are usually dressed in vulnerable clothing. The villains are usually spirits ghosts zombies vampires werewolves clowns or supernatural beasts. The hero is typically a man.


Plot for a horror story:
  • Family move into a house which is haunted by its past residents.
  • A car breaks down late at night in the middle of no where there is no phone reception or people to help.    

Genre

What is genre?

Genre is a category or type, it occurs in films, music, books, TV etc. For example, Terminator 2 is of a science fiction genre, based on the plot as it involves robots, teleportation and time travel.
